From Typewriters to Technology: ALVA Teacher Inspires Students to Explore Their Potential

Stories & Spotlights

For nearly 30 years, Alabama CTE teacher Janita Moravits has embraced the ever-changing world of education and technology. From replacing typewriters with computers in her first classroom to helping students explore emerging careers in information technology, Ms. Moravits has built her career around one guiding principle: never stop learning.

Now in her second year with ALVA, Ms. Moravits brings decades of experience, a wide range of teaching certifications and an enthusiasm for helping students discover what excites them.

A Lifelong Passion for Learning

Ms. Moravits’ interest in technology began with her father, an accountant who embraced computers long before they became everyday essentials.

That curiosity followed her into her first full-time teaching position at a small school, where she was hired to teach typing. When the superintendent asked what equipment she wanted for her classroom, her answer was simple.

“I don’t want typewriters. I want computers,” she recalled.

With his support, she established a computer lab, beginning a career that would eventually span subjects ranging from business and digital media to math, science, and early childhood education.

“It was my goal every year to add something new to my resume,” she said.

Preparing Students for Tomorrow’s Careers

Today, Ms. Moravits teaches cloud and virtualization technology alongside early childhood education courses at ALVA, helping students explore two distinct career pathways.

Her approach emphasizes hands-on learning, creativity, and student choice. Rather than requiring every student to complete assignments the same way, she encourages them to explore topics that interest them and present their findings in ways that reflect their strengths.

Some students have even turned traditional presentations into podcasts, building communication and technical skills while exploring new interests.

“Start doing something that might turn into a career for you,” Ms. Moravits encourages her students.

She also champions opportunities for girls interested in science and technology, pointing to female students who have excelled in drone pilot coursework and IT classes.

Helping Every Student Find Their Spark

For Ms. Moravits, education isn’t simply about mastering a subject. It’s about understanding what motivates each student and helping them recognize their potential.

“I try to figure out what’s going to move this student, what’s going to make this student actually want to participate,” she explained.

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed by her colleagues.

“She wants everything for her students,” said Cindy Cates, CTE administrator. “She is definitely a visionary.”

Whether introducing students to emerging technologies or helping them discover unexpected career interests, Ms. Moravits remains committed to preparing them for a changing world.

“It’s about finding out about them and what’s going to make them move,” she said. “It’s about them.”
