Nick Limberakis: How educational freedom changed my son’s life
Apr 6, 2026
In today’s world, political noise often drowns out the voices of the people most affected by public policy decisions. There is no better example than parental rights and school choice.
I am not a politician or a political insider. I am a parent, and I know firsthand the difference that having alternative education options in Alabama has made in my son’s life.
Like all parents, I want to give my son the best chance to thrive and succeed. I am a combat veteran who served our nation for 16 years, and today I work as a scuba diving instructor and underwater criminal investigator.
Life has taught me that people are not all the same, and a cookie-cutter approach rarely works for everyone. Every child has different needs. For many students, traditional schooling may be the best option.
But for others, like my son, having alternative options is critical.
Throughout his life, John has struggled with Social Separation Anxiety (SSA). It made it nearly impossible for him to succeed in a traditional school setting, and as his father, I knew I had to make a change.
John did not fit the standard model. He needed something different. A different educational approach.
Thankfully, I learned about the Alabama Virtual Academy (ALVA).
In 2019, I decided to enroll him in ALVA, and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Now a ninth-grader, he has a completely different outlook on life and his future. I have watched a young child, once paralyzed by fear, become a young man determined to invest in his own future. What was once an obstacle, he now sees as an opportunity.
I am asking our policymakers and educational leaders to look beyond the headlines, partisan politics, and funding battles. Education is not about institutions. It is about preparing the next generation to thrive in the real world.
Like every generation before it, today’s students do not need a one-size-fits-all approach forced upon them. The difference is that in 2026, we now have the technology and understanding to offer real alternatives.
No student should fall through the cracks.
Thanks to ALVA, we found an educational path that works for my son. In years past, he might have become another statistic. Instead, we found a way forward.
Despite the challenges he has faced, John continues to overcome them one by one. Soon, he will begin dual enrollment courses and continue building his future.
I served in combat zones fighting for our country. Today, I stand with parents who are fighting for the freedom to make the best decisions for their children.
Parental rights and educational freedom are more than buzzwords. They are bigger than politics. Without alternative education options, countless students would be left behind.
I am grateful every day that my son was not one of them.
